Rep. Jim Carmichael and Wayne County Prosecutor Martin Franz visited the Moreland Triway Public Preschool to read with the class of 15 children, ages 3 to 5. This visit was part of the state-wide initiative "Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Ohio," and to raise awareness of the social and economic benefits of quality pre-kindergarten.

"Children are our communities' greatest assets, "Carmichael said.
"It is essential that they have access to quality early learning environments that help them develop the skills necessary to grow into productive, contributing citizens," Carmichael said. "And a good education is great for Ohio."

Franz, a member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Ohio, said that high quality pre-k can also cut crime. He cited a study of Michigan's High Scope/Perry Preschool program that found at-risk kids left out of the program were five times more likely to have become chronic lawbreakers than similar children who attended the program.

"By providing all of Ohio's children with access to quality pre-k, we are preparing them to succeed in school and life, while greatly reducing the chances that they become involved in later crime," Franz said.

Moreland Triway Public Preschool is operated by Community Action Wayne/Medina in collaboration with Triway Schools. Community Action Wayne/Medina also operates Head Start preschools in Wayne and Medina counties.
